REVIEW: Mac OS X Training for Windows Users DVD featuring Terry White
Don’t let the title of this DVD fool you. While it may be targeted for Windows
users who have moved to the Macintosh, it is useful to a much wider audience.
In a little over two hours Terry White touches on 27 some different aspects of
Tiger. The DVD is divided in to chapters. The 29 chapters range in length from
one minute to fifteen minutes. Mr. White is very knowledgeable and has a well
developed and easily understood presentation.
This DVD will not make you an expert on OS X , but it will give you a better understanding
of OS X. In addition you will pick up many useful tips on increasing the ease
of use and effectiveness of your computer. While OS X.4 (Tiger) is used, most
of the information applies to early versions of OS X. Mr. White does tell you
when something applies only to X.4.
After the basics are covered the DVD Tutorials also go into topics such as transferring
your files from your Windows computer, setting up your peripherals and managing
your pictures and music. The author is articulate in the explanations, presents
the material at just the right level of detail, and the presentation itself is
very well paced.
One negative aspect is the difficulty in switching back to the main menu if you
want to skip a chapter or review a specific chapter latter. You could fast forward,
but there are no visual clues to mark the end of a chapter.
As described on the authors web page, the DVD starts off with the Top 10 things
you need to know about using your Mac. After the basics are covered then it goes
into more detail about copying your files over from your Windows computer, how
to get around in the Finder, burning CDs and DVDs and managing your pictures and
music. You'll learn how to configure Apple's Mail app with your account settings
and ways to transfer your e-mail from Microsoft Outlook on the PC. With easy to
navigate chapters you'll be able to go directly to the sections covering the topics
that interest you the most. Also using Virtual PC you'll see some side-by-side
instruction so that you'll know where things are on Mac OS X compared to where
they are on Windows XP. This DVD is also great for IT professionals that support
Macs in their department. Features Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger.

Bottom Line:
This DVD is obviously designed to get Windows "Switchers" and first
time Macintosh users up to speed quickly on their new Macintosh computer.
Whether you're a long time Windows user or new to computers, this DVD video will
show you what you need to know to be productive on the Mac almost immediately.
If you have been a “Windows” user this will show how easy it is to
“correlate” the computer operations to Mac OS X and should alleviate
any anxiety one might have in switching to the Macintosh platform. If you are
a Macintosh user this will also help fill in the gaps for lots of “stuff”
you probably were not aware of. As a matter of fact it is really a great course
in fundamentals.
